R01 – Introduction to Roofing

This presentation will discuss the basics of the most utilized roofing systems in the coastal climate of British Columbia. Guillaume will provide information on the different roofing membranes and on some of the challenges of each of the roofing systems. He will also briefly discuss some of the maintenance that is required for these different types of roofs.

Biography
Guillaume Vadeboncoeur is a Professional Engineer with over 11 years of experience in building science. Guillaume has a mechanical engineering degree with a major in material properties. Guillaume is a project manager and a project engineer with WSP Canada Inc. that has managed several building science projects that include building envelope remediations, building envelope condition assessments, roofing replacements and wall monitoring. His expertise lies with knowledge of curtain walls, building science theories and ways to incorporate new technologies in construction. Guillaume has been a member of APEGBC since 2004 and obtained his certificate of registration in April 2009, is a member of the ACECBC Building Engineering Steering Committee, and is president of the RCI (Roofing Consultants Institute) Western Canada Chapter.

 Rick Ruppert is a Registered Architect with more than twenty years of professional practice experience who is knowledgeable in all facets of building project design and construction. His body of work includes the widest possible variety of project types including ten years in Chicago centered on high rise design and projects in historic preservation and adaptive re-use. Rick has also managed numerous educational, institutional and civic building projects throughout the US. He now brings this vast experience to focus on topics concerning the integrity and performance of the whole building envelope exclusively with Firestone Building Products. Ruppert further contributes to this ongoing dialog through the articles, lectures and the tools and resources he develops to aid the building design community.

R03 – Green Roofing by Xeroflor

A demonstration of a loose-laid, lightweight, roll-out mat system with low maintenance sedum planting grown locally in BC. This instant green roof is fully customizable, and high performing. No “loose” growing medium makes for a clean and simple installation. Component rolls make for easy transportation, installation and retraction, for roof access if necessary. Participants will learn firsthand about a popular extensive system – with optional add-on features for increased stormwater retention and biodiversity.

Sasha is a leading green roof consultant working with designers, owners and contractors on green roofs of various complexities – from retrofits to new construction. One of her most recent, and notable, projects is the Seaforth Armory in Vancouver. Sasha’s extensive experience as a designer, technical consultant, estimator, and installation supervisor has established her as one of Canada’s foremost green roof professionals. A reputable educational speaker, Sasha has presented at Construct Canada, RoofTech, the Building Envelope Forum and CAGBC conferences.
